Black Ghosts vs. Lindstrom, I feel vs something new
Up beat remix.This sound is very organic and original for electronic music.
It never gets off the path of good song writing, an obvious producer at heart.

Crystal Castles, Dancer in the dark, Air War
Off a great soundtrack and it keeps me interested in Crystal Castles as a staple in my ever evolving musical collection. It’s playful but precise.

The Honeydrips, Here comes the future, Fall from a Height
Recently on tour with Jens Lekman, this band caught my ear with this song. I put this track on repeat and enjoy the samples just as much as the consistent bass track that keep this song driving. It’s a song that really stands out on “Here comes the future” but I recommend a good listen to the rest of the tracks.

Thao Nguyen, We Brave Bee Stings and All, Swimming Pools
I’ve been obsessed with these guys since I heard them on a compilation. But I come back to this track more than any other due to it’s ability to keep me wanting more. It tells a story and is upbeat within the folk realm.

Ruby Suns, Sea Lion, Oh, Mojave
Although this is the screw I enjoy throwing into my play mix it has the same energy as Crystal Castles but reflects on a timeless art of music making. I see myself sipping on a cold corona somewhere along the shores of Mexico. I hope you find it as light and enjoyable as I do.

Elf Power,In a cave, Spiral Stairs
I felt it to be a soft alternative to end off the mix with a strong melody and stylized much in the same fashion as Industrialized Shirts, The frosted AMbassador, and others taking an ambiguous step into their musical development.

You might usually be put off by a covers album but man, has this album grown on me. Very blues oriented and very dark. Oh I love it.

Whitest Boy Alive, “Golden Cage” from their 2007 Album “Dreams”
Ever since I died and went to heaven after hearing Kings of Convenience I decided I should give their most recent project a chance. You can expect a slightly different approach that feels close to home.

Vetiver, “You May Be Blue” from their 2006 album “To Find Me Gone”
More freaky, folky, neo-psychedelia…

Alyssandra Nighswonger, “Blow All Your Troubles Away”
This is a fellow Long Beach musician. When I listen to her I get striking images of old photographs, dusty roads, bicycles, leather shoes with hard tack soles, top hats, and freaky beards.

Good Luck Bear, “Grab Your Coat”
From the LA area, Good Luck Bear possesses some great pop skills. He’s bold and honest because he’s not afraid of simplicity, and I love him for it.

The end of this song has a Mark Martucci / early Death Cab mood to it that I really appreciate.

Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton – Our Hell
The album that this song is from, entitled “Knives Don’t Have Your Back” is a must-listen. Emily Haines is the lead vocalist of the band Metric, who’s recent album, “Grow Up and Blow Away” is worth investigation as well. This particular song is deep, lost, sad, and musically complex. Watch this song’s music video at www.emilyhaines.com . Really well done.

Merz – Lucky Adam
I don’t know much about either of these artists, but both of these particular tracks have a simple, fun, light-heartedness to them.

Destroyer – Blue Flower / Blue Flame
One of my favorite bands of all time. As for the line “A woman by another name is not a woman”, well, I’m at an utter loss there. If you at all enjoy their music, see them live. One of the best performers I have ever had the chance to enjoy.

Evangelicals – Midnight Vignette
It’s a bit like a pile of leaves. Seemingly a little messy, but all kinds of pleasure once you’re in it.

The Ting Tings – Great DJ (Calvin Harris Remix)
Unfortunately, the only copy I could find of this song seems to cut out prematurely.  Regardless, the catchiness of this song haunted me for at least a week. I hope it does the same for you and keeps you busy until the next playmix. “Imagine all the girls, ah-ah ah……….”

Andrew Bird – Plasticities
I wanted to start out with a song that was approachable enough to be enjoyed on the first listen. This track luckily pulls that off, while also having a great amount of musical depth.

Okkervil River – Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe
The first few times I heard this song I was surprised that Will Sheff (lead singer) resisted switching over to falsetto during the chorus lead-in. It sort of sneaks up on you and makes you think “man, he’s going for it”.

Lykke Li – I’m Good, I’m Gone
This started out as a guilty pleasure for almost being “too” catchy, but hey, I couldn’t resist. I was tempted to put up “Little Bit” by Lykke Li instead, so if you enjoy this track, give “Little Bit” a listen as well.

Hot Chip – We Are Looking For A Lot Of Love
This song just kills me. It’s so… you just have to hear it. Hot Chip has the ability to explore the electronic landscape while instilling a soul in each song, which I haven’t found in many electronic bands.

Ming & Ping – Beautiful Things
The keyboard riff that plays during the chorus has the ability to stick in your head for days. There’s a mid-frequency fuzz sound that gives this song a delightful, thick sound with smooth vocals on top.

Thao Nguyen & The get down stay down: Beat (Health, Life and Fire)
Bringing something modest mouse never did for me. With lines like “health, life and fire” over cool melodies who couldn’t enjoy these clever hooks.

The Magnetic Fields: Underwear
One of my Favorite Magnetic Fields songs, I can’t stop listening to this beat driven song that questions what’s better than a boy or girl in their underwear? A song so mellow yet driving can be played at almost any chosen time.

Barton Carroll: Certain Circles
Brings a twang to the table that is full of melody and progression. The instrumentation of this piece gives an interesting twist yet is smoothly audible.

The Helio Sequence: Can’t Say No
Starts off almost like a wave and pushes a strong chorus throughout the remainder of the song. If you enjoy British Sea Power or even Nada Surf you’ll find a little gem in this artist.

Pale Young Gentlemen: Saturday Night
I play this song every Saturday night, need I say more? Well I will, it has a carefree overlay and I’m not surprised that this band has so many amazing hits. I enjoy the singer and it brings me back to the old country in a way Beirut doesn’t.

Panda Bear: Comfy in Nautica (Turbostation Remix)
I found myself getting lost in the vast sea that is Panda Bear. Now thanks to the Turbostation Remix I can easily find my way along this epic adventure that will cap off my playmix.

Dreadful Yawns, “You’ve Been Recorded” from the 2007 album “Rest” – These guys just fell into my lap one day as I was sifting through piles and piles of CDs at a radio station I used to frequent. It’s dreamy, it’s tinged with modern vices, and the entire album is a great play. An album that plays through is hard to find these days, so I send it off to you!

The Avett Brothers, “Dancing Daze” from the 2006 album “Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Sessions” – This trio (two are actually brothers) rocked so hard that their stage techs were handing them guitars with broken strings because they had no more guitars left and no time to change them. Needless to say, I was absolutely blown away at their energy and their ability to create a mountain of sound with just three. It’s fast, it’s tender, it’s naïve and wise, it’s old and it’s new. They’ve got one hell of a spirit and man, can they play. (Coming to LA in March, don’t miss them!)

Langhorne Slim, “The Electric Love Letter” from the 2005 album “When the Sun’s Gone Down” – Langhorne, like the Avett Brothers, possesses a true spirit that is hard to miss. Backed by some tremendous musicians on this album, you’ll be delighted by wonderful banjo arrangements, fast guitars, and booming upright precision.
